Technological Innovations

The Commission on the History of Cartography is committed to improve the existing knowledge on the technological innovations that have impacted on the development of cartography during the 19th and 20th centuries. Technologically cartography since 1800 has seen profound changes and although much of the earlier innovations such as those in the printing industry have been adequately documented, much remains to be done regarding specific developments and applications in topographical surveying, photogrammetry, remote sensing, computer-aided cartography and geographic information science. During the 20th century, a completely new technology has become available and new conceptual attitudes towards its methodology have evolved.
